London, Dec 24 : Arsenal
manager Arsene Wenger has hit back at Manchester United winger Nani for
claiming that the Gunners are already out of this season's Premier
League title race.
Nani believes that Chelsea offer the only threat to United this
season, even though they have gone five league matches without recording
a victory.
"Everybody has a different opinion and nobody is a prophet," said Gunners boss Wenger.
"We live a society where everybody knows everything and it looks like it is a shame to say 'I don't know'.
"I personally don't know who will win the league. I managed 1,600
games, so if Nani knows he must be 1600 times more intelligent than I
am!"
Arsenal have an early opportunity to prove Nani wrong when they host Chelsea on Monday night.
The Gunners' record against Chelsea and United is dire, having lost
14 of their 18 encounters since 2007 and registered just two victories
in that time. Wenger admits it is time to demonstrate that Arsenal can
compete against their main rivals for the Premier League title.
"Of course we have a point to prove given our record against the big
teams," he said. "You show that you are up to the level expected from
you in these games. That's the obstacle to get over. At home in the big
game, you want to win.
"We don't really think about the record because the statistics are
history and every game is a new start. Our statistics recently are
against us because we have a very young team.
"But three years ago, we lost the small games and didn't lose the big
games but still lost the championship so we have to combine both sides
of it. We are in a strong position now and we know our home form against
the big teams will be the decider for the championship."
